Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure used to treat an infected or damaged tooth by removing the infected pulp, cleaning the canal, and sealing it to prevent further infection. It helps save the natural tooth and prevents the need for extraction.
Why is a Root Canal Needed?
A root canal is required when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels) becomes inflamed or infected due to:
Deep cavities (tooth decay)
Cracked or fractured teeth
Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
Injury or trauma to the tooth
Symptoms Indicating a Root Canal May Be Needed:
✔️ Severe tooth pain (especially when chewing or applying pressure)
✔️ Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers
✔️ Swelling or tenderness in the gums
✔️ Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
✔️ Pimple-like swelling (abscess) on the gums
Steps of Root Canal Treatment
Diagnosis & X-ray – The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to assess the infection.
Anesthesia – Local anesthesia is given to numb the area, ensuring a pain-free procedure.
Cleaning the Infected Pulp – The dentist creates an opening in the tooth and removes the infected or dead pulp using special tools.
Disinfection & Shaping – The inside of the root canal is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
Filling the Canal – The empty space is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent reinfection.
Sealing the Tooth – A temporary or permanent filling is placed to close the opening.
Crown Placement – In most cases, a dental crown is placed on the treated tooth to restore its strength and function.
Recovery & Aftercare
Some mild discomfort is normal for a few days and can be managed with painkillers.
Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until fully restored.
Maintain good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups).
Get a crown placed if recommended to protect the tooth from breaking.
